The Colours in My Mood | An Interview with Artist Celeste C. da Luz

The Colours in My Mood | An Interview with Artist Celeste C. da Luz

January 13, 2019

Meet Celeste C. da Luz. A painter from Macau, who expresses herself through the spontaneity of acrylic colour. Her beautifully soft layers and interesting colour combinations won us over when she submitted her work to our LIFTED'18 art competition for emerging artists. Here's what she had to say:

[DYD] What made you decide to enter your artwork with LIFTED\\18?

[CCDL] Loving what I am doing right now and hoping to sustain my practice after I graduate, I always look for opportunities to showcase my work to people. As an independent artist-run platform that supports artists at the beginning stage of their careers, I believe Dark Yellow Dot can provide the perfect opportunity to promote and showcase my work to.

[DYD] What prompted you to take up art in the first place?

[CCDL] Because making art makes me feel happy!

[DYD] Do you work from home or in a studio? How does this inform your art process?

[CCDL] I work in my studio space mostly, but I also enjoy carrying my colour palette and sketchbooks with me everywhere. Nature is always one of my biggest inspirations.

[DYD] How do you decide on your colour palettes?

[CCDL] I don't normally plan on what I am going to paint, so it is quite randomly chosen. It depends on my mood that day.

[DYD] Are there any artists careers, styles or periods that inspire you? Why?

[CCDL] Gerhard Richter is one of the artists that inspire me. His artistic and philosophical credos, and also his technique of using tools to create layers, strokes and scrapes on his completely abstract canvases, influence my creations a lot. The work of Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O'Keeffe, Willem de Kooning, Henri Matisse, David Batchelor, Jasper Johns (and a lot more) also give me great inspiration.

[DYD] What's your favourite thing to do outside of making art?

[CCDL] I studied video production for my BA degree and worked as a freelancer in the film industry for 2 years so I am quite into films, especially films that are with strong visual concept and production design.

[DYD] What is one that thing you want to get really good at?

[CCDL] Observation skills.

[DYD] What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

[CCDL] ‘Time spent over thinking = Time wasted for learning through making.’

[DYD] Where else can we find your art, online or in person?

[CCDL] My website celestecdaluz.com has all of my finished work. I also have Instagram @celestecdaluz that I update very often, documenting both my work in progress and finished work.
