Wanderings
Charlotte Cuny
Wanderings is a synthesis of Charlotte Cuny’s questionings in her recent years, focusing on painting and including an immersion into nature, looking for a protection. In all her works, there is a question of presence/absence, with someone hidden within nature or with ghosts as a symbol of past within present. If she mainly paints with oil, Charlotte has been painting with tempera since a year looking for increasing her relation to nature. She is little by little mixing tempera with oil and ink in her works. The temporality of her works are slower, with an accumulation of presents. If she used to be able to paint one painting per day, she now likes to live with them and listen to what they are whispering to her day after day.
Charlotte Cuny is a French painter based between London and Paris. In 2023, she was selected to ‘Le Prix du Hainaut’ (BE) and exhibited in Paris, Barcelona or in the East of France. She had a first Solo Show in 2020 in Maître Albert Gallery in Paris. She participated to collective shows in Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern/Tate exchange, K11 Musea, Bozar – Bruxelles, Apiary Studios, Candid Arts Trust or Lethaby Gallery in Central Saint Martins. In 2022, she went to a residency in Tangent Projects in Barcelona following a few others such as Pienkow in Poland (2019), Bliiida, Metz (FR-2020) and Harwich – UK (2020) thanks to the artists group Slash.Arts she belongs to. Charlotte obtained a Masters of Fine Arts in Central Saint Martins – with Merit et of painting in Arts², Mons, Belgium – with High Honors.
Charlotte Cuny paints her memories from her own pictures which she uses to express her emotions, perceptions, sensations between deconstruction and abstract figuration. It is a way to question the place of past within present. Recently, she started to focus on dreams in her paintings as they are ‘the most ancient memories’ by collaging different memories together, creating more surrealistic works and including ghosts within her works. She deconstructs her memories with traces and colours, as traces are ‘an expression of the soul’ and ‘colours of emotions’. She expands her practice to other mediums she considers as “expanded painting”. She created ‘combines’ going from etchings to photoshop to UV Print on wood between traditional techniques to modern ones. She recently made her first 3D animated landscape wondering how to communicate her emotions digitally and with moving images, including her physical work (bit.ly/3wfaRwy). She is playful and likes to go from one medium to another, questioning human relation between nature, digital and painting which always gather all the other questionings as a whole.
