Meet Nasima Bibi.

Nasima Bibi is a British Artist with a Bangladeshi heritage. Her bright and incredibly detailed paintings won us over when she submitted her work to our first ever art competition for emerging artists local to London. Our first competition LIFTED//17 selected 3 young artists to exhibit at the Genesis Cinema Gallery in Mile End. Along with the group exhibition, each artist also received a generous gift card to Cass Art supplies to go towards their art practice.

Nasima’s attention to detail, light, texture and colour in her paintings are nothing short of remarkable. We couldn’t wait to pick her brain before the show. Here’s what she had to say:

What was your biggest inspiration when creating the pieces that we featured for this show?

I like combining plant life with figurative art, it’s a reoccurring theme that shows up in some of my pieces. For the artworks featured I placed leafy elements within the work as a way of conveying the titles message. To explain a piece, I’ll give an example; ‘Overgrown’ was inspired by the name of a music album, as the work was musically inspired, I listened to the song/s while painting.

Are there any artists/ styles /periods that inspire you?

Surrealist and politically related works have always inspired me. Surrealism is always exciting to look at and makes you look at reality from a different view point. Politically inspired work such as Banksy is one of the reasons why I started creating work with a message. I like the witty and provocative nature of that style of work and again like surrealism it makes you question everyday life.

Can you tell us a bit about your process?

When creating work, it usually arises from a phrase, from that I usually do a preliminary sketch, then do somereference research to help develop the idea, after that I work out the best colour combinations. Once I am satisfied with my final sketch I’ll proceed with the painting.

What made you decide to apply for this competition?

I’m always looking to enter my work into competitions and Dark Yellow Dot was affordable to enter so I took on the opportunity in hopes that my work would be seen. I honestly didn’t expect to be one of the winners so I was chuffed!

Aside from the exhibition at the Genesis, where else can we find your art?

You can find my one Instagram @NasimaBibi I am currently with a group called Artigon, they search for newly emerging artists and hold exhibitions once or twice a year. You can also check my website too.

What projects are you working on next?

I’m just going to keep building up my portfolio for the meantime to develop my skill set.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of making art?

Exploring new things/places. Before painting was my passion, travel was something I really wanted to do. I have also been a background artist i.e. an extra a few times for TV shows, it’s something I never had an interest in doing but the process fascinated me and I’ve met some great like-minded people because of it.
